Veteran actor James Whitmore has passed away at the age of 87. The easily recognizable face was in some favourite films of mine; Them! (1954), Oklahoma! (1955), Planet of the Apes (1968), and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970). In 1975 he won a Tony Award for his role on Broadway in Give 'em Hell, Harry! Telefantasy fans will remember him from "On Thursday We Leave For Home", a memorable (hour-long) episode of the original Twilight Zone television series.When I was a little one I used to get him mixed up with Stuart Whitman -- in name only, the two men looked quite a bit different from one another. I call James Whitmore the "exclamation mark actor" based on the fact that he appeared in many films that had that form of punctuation in the title.
